Research & Teaching

Hi, I'm Jonny-Bix. I'm a Berlin-based curator, dramaturg, artist and researcher working across performance, AI and digital culture.

I create exhibitions, performances and public programmes that explore how new technologies shape the way we relate to one another, tell stories and imagine the future.

I'm interested in making complex technological and social questions tangible through artistic experiences that invite curiosity, conversation and new perspectives.

Drostes Hände

AI-Generated Image Series, 2026

Concept, Artistic Direction: Jonny-Bix Bongers

Drostes Hände begins with a single image and an instruction: reproduce Johann Sprick’s portrait of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff as faithfully as possible. Three generative AI models received the same visual reference and instructions. Each returned a subtly different interpretation.

Facial features, hands, textures, and painterly details shift between the versions. These differences reveal the reconstruction involved in producing an apparently faithful copy. They also offer a way to examine the aesthetic assumptions and statistical patterns that shape each model’s output.

Through this repeated act of reproduction, the series asks how generative AI participates in shaping our images of the past. What happens to a familiar portrait when its details are reconstructed by different systems? And how might these processes change what we recognise, preserve, and remember as cultural heritage?
